hi all,
i am a derivative asylee who adjusted for LPR and am awaiting a response. After filing for adjustment, i renewed my country passport through the embassy. now i want to apply for refugee travel doc and there's a questuon that asks if i ever renewed my passport and why? what effect does this have on my application?
thx much.

according to the "law", asylees or derivative asylees, are not allowed to renew their passports. renewing passport is a sign of seeking your COP's protection and if it is not well explained, can lead to the termination of your asylum status. of course, this is the extreme. normally a lot of people renew their passports and even visit COP.

if you want my opinion, you should not lie and should go ahead and state that you have renewed it and give a convincing explanation.

i think thankful will be able to give u a more professional suggestion.

tributeblinky,
thanks for your reply. i will definitely tell the truth. it's just the part where they ask for an axplanation that has thrown me off. what is acceptable as an explanation? i renewed because i thought i would need a valid passport at all times inorder to leave the country even with the RTD. hopefully Thankful and others will be able to help.
bless you.

To clarify, I do not give "professional suggestion" to anyone on this forum. I do not represent anyone on this board; I do not offer legal advice and I do not have a lawyer-client relationship with anyone here.

You are required to explain why you renewed the passport.

If you are concerned that your reason is not consistent with your asylum claim, you can avoid this by NOT applying for a refugee travel document.

i understand ur position Thankful, so thank u for taking time to post ur comment. i was honestly under the impression that to travel to any country (other than COP) i would need a valid passport. i applied through the embassy with no problem at all. but after readin' posts here i am now aware that this could present problems. at this point i guess my best bet is to wait for the greencard, and apply for a RP, right? thx again.

It is not a bad idea.
