I had another infopass today

Since last time I did not ask about the RP for travel I went to the infopass appointment again today. I had a different IO, a very pleasant lady, who patiently took her time answering all my questions. So here is the dialog:
I: I am here to find out about my options for travel document. I got permanent residence status last year, based on asylum. In the past I traveled on RTD, but it is expiring soon and I would like to know what I can use for travel now, when I am a LPR.
IO: Here, let me give you the updated 131 application, for your new RTD. Make sure that this time your RTD indicates that your status is of a permanent resident.
I: So, I should continue traveling with RTD?
IO: Yes, your green card is still linked to your asylum and RTD signifies that you are under the protection of the US government.
I: Can I use a re-entry permit?
IO: No, typically RP is for individuals who intend to travel outside of US for more than 1 year. Also, the RP implies that you have a valid national passport on hand. I guess, you probably do not have it anymore.
I: In fact, my NP is still valid.
IO: Have you renewed it since the asylum grant?
I: No, it is the original passport, with which I first arrived to the US.
IO: How long is your trip?
I: 2 weeks
IO: Then you can still travel with your NP, as long as you are not going back to the COP. You should not have any problems at all, as long as your original passport is still valid. For short trips you can use it until its expiration date.
I: Would renewing my NP be ok as well?
IO: No, renewing your NP is indicative that you again searched the protection from the country from which you claimed persecution.
I: Ok, but traveling on the original NP is not a problem?
IO: You will not have any problem with it. Travel with your original NP until its expiration date.
I: Could I get something in writing that verifies this?
IO: Read the application for 131 carefully, it has answers to your questions.
I: But it does not talk about the NP... Also, I heard cases when an LPR was traveling with the RTD and it was confiscated at the POE, or in some cases, the resident was heavily questioned about why they are using the RTD now that they are permanent residents.
IO: We must apologize for such incidences. Sometimes, new people come to work and they are not familiar with the law...It was certainly not right what those officers did.

I thanked her and went home.

Hey Doctorn,

Did you record the conversation or did you tape it with your video camera ??

Or perhaps you must have an excellent memory so you just got home and trasncripted the exact conversation with the IO...

Yep, I am proud to say that I have a phenomenal memory.

Hi Doctorn,

I'm a little confused with what she told you. If you renew you COP passport is consider seeking pretection from you COP. But why if you use your current passport is not? If you use it, you are actually under the protection of your COP, not under protection of US government.

By the way you're right. But renewing NP means geting any benefits from COP. And kind of EXTENDING so-called COP's "protection" . You're just using NP like ID.

Well when you enter they look at you with weird looks with a RTD...

This time I am going to travel with a RP & see what the reaction is. I have my NP so I may carry that too but visa is on the RP..so I am thinking to show my RP

Yeah, that's right. But using NP to travel is actually using the "benefits", although it's just an ID.

Hi Want,

is you NP still valid? Did you renew it?

Hi Want,

Renewed it to get a visa last year from germany but they would not issue it since i had gone on a RTD...Involved congressman Allen from VA and he got my RTD in a week cuz I had to visit a sick relative.

I agree with your logic here. It seems that when I use the NP, whether renewed or old, I am presenting myself as a citizen of the COP with all the possible implications. I do not know really... It just seemed from her assurance that an old NP is ok to use. I was happy with that information because now I have a back-up in case my RTD does not get here in time for my trip. I guess there is no complete clarity in the USCIS system regarding this issue.

The fact of the matter is, no matter what, you are still a citizen of your country. If a war happens and you are out of country and a PR Of U.S, do you think U.S embassy will help you? NO way, their priority is U.S Citizens.

I also doubt an ex asylee with GC+RTD had problems and had to be evacuated, the U.S embassy will ask him/her to contact his home embassy first..Maybe I am wrong but thats what I think...

Actually they will--but yes after they take care of citizens first. This is from personal experiences.

I think if you're using your old NP issued before Asylum, you're OK. Cuz you know after Asylum granted it's only one ID you have, you're using your NP to get Driver License, SS card or other stuff. It's like using you Birth Certificate or you High School Diploma from COP. But it's not good for traveling outside USA.

Has anyone renewed their passport after you have PR approval stamp on your passport?
My passport is going to expire in a couple of weeks, but I worry that the Consulate will not renew my passport if they see the AS6 approval on it. On the other hand, if I apply for RTD, I have to provide reason why I renewed it ( and I had a good reason for that). Should I let my passport expire and renew my RTD instead? The thing that confused me is, I am going to loose my COP citizenship for not renewing it but there is no guarantee that I am going to get US citizenship, what would you do?
