I had my interview for political asylum the las january 09. The officer told me that I receive my answer by mail address in two weeks after my interview. I have 65 days waiting for my answer and I didn't receive any answer yet. Is normal this process? My I-94 expired 20 days ago and I don't know what can I do now. I sent a letter 1 month ago and I didn't receive anything. I read in the internet (immigration webpage) that there are 2 ways to know the decision, writing or going to the asylum office. I am thinking to go to the asylum office the next week and pick up my decision there but I am afraid because I don't know If I need to be more patience or they can denied my case, but they said the is normal if I go. Plese help me, I don't want to do anything wrong!!!! Thanks very much!!!

Hola Daniela,

Just go to the asylum office and tell them you have not received the decision and you were told by the officer that you will receive the written decision in two weeks, but now more than two months have passed and you did not get anything. Good Luck.

Thank you for your recommendation. I'll do it, but I am nervious :(
When you finished your interview, did the officer gave you any paper saying that they will mail you a decision?

No, the officer only asked me where I receive my mail and he told me that my answer I will receive by mail address. But I am still waiting!!!

Very Strange

Daniela,
Something is very strange here.. The person who interviewed you was suppose to give you a paper to come back in 2 weeks for your result.. What state did this happen in?

No the officer never gave any paper. I think is because I was in legal status. Heonlytold me I will receive my answer by mail address maybe in twoo weeks. I had listen that other people after theinterview received 1 paper but me not. I don't know really what is happening. :(

Actually, some will be given the answer at the INS office and some will get the result in the mail. I forgot what specification they use as to who gets the result where, but the fact that the IO told her she will get it in the mail is not strange. I, myself, was sent both the letter of recommendation of approval and the approval in the mail. The IO never gave me a letter that says come back in 2 weeks. So don't worry. Just go to the INS office to inquire about the result of the interview if you don't get it soon. Good luck!

Thanks for your answer, Ihave a question: how many time since your interview did you receive the letters? after two weeks?

If I remember correctly, I think it was 1 month.

From my experience with few friends of mine.. Those who applied before 2004, did not recieve letter at end of interview, they were told that check on the mail but i know for a fact, 4 of us did it in 2005 and we all got a letter after the interview to come back in 2 weeks.. Infact, another friend of mine just applied and got a letter to come back in 2 weeks in 2006.. This is why it is so strange to me..

I will recommend that you go to your local asylum office.

Thanks, yes I will goto the asylum office very soon. Maybe they forget something or they sent the answer and it was lost!! I don't know but only there they can tell me what is happening, do you think???

The standard practice is to return in two weeks to pick up the decision. But there are two major exceptions to the rule. The first is people who live too far away. The second is people who are in lawful status at the time of the interview.

Thanks. I live in Orlando and my interview was in Miami, but I will go because I have 2 month and I didn't receive any answer. I don't know what can they tell me.

I am not sure if people being in status or not factors in the mail notification or in-person delivery. Or maybe there is such a rule but the local office in NYC that I went to does not observe it, because I had my interview on the same day as two other clients of my lawyer and we all were told to come back in 2 weeks to get the decisions in person ; and I and one of the other clients were both in lawful status at that time and the other client was not but we all were told to come back in 2 weeks. So who knows exactly why some offices mail the decision and some don't. Anyway, it is not that important for you right now either way; the important thing is since you spent more than two months waiting, you can/should either call them or go there in person to get the result. Good luck; hope you are granted. :) ....Let us know.

I was out of status by the time of the interview, I went back two weeks later and got the recommended approval letter, if you live in orlando I suggest you to call them first, try to talk with the asylum officer who interview you or with anybody else...

Guacho.

Thanks. I called two o three times to USCIS and they told me that by phone they cannot give me any information about my case but I can go to the asylum office. I really want to know what happen.

USCIS or asylum office??

Did you call USCIS ( the 1800 number ) or the asylum office where you had you interview?????, you should call the asylum office, I called several times and they always gave me information about my case.....they must understand that you live pretty far away.....call them first.

Guacho.

Do you have the telephone numbers where you called? I called to Miami Asylum office where my interview was and I never did comunicate with anybody, I tried to call to the extension of the officer and only the voice mail....Thanks

You say you called them and they told you on the phone to go to the asylum office, so go.....as soon as possible. Do not wait any more for no good reason.
