Here is my situation..
My I-94 and Visa stamp expired in Feb'07. But I have another I-797 which I got when transferred to a new company, with validity upto May'08. I am planning to go to India some time this year.
So before going to India, should I go to Canada or Mexico and get new visa stamp till May'08. After reading previous replies in this thread, I'm assuming that we can even go to local BCIS office . I'm confused. Please advice what exactly has to be done.
One more question, Can I apply for H1 extension much before the current I-797 expires, i.e My 797 expires in May'08. If I can apply for extension , I will wait till I recieve the new one and go for stamping once for all, instead of making two trips to Canada.
Thanks in Advance..

For a visa sticker/stamp you will need to go to a US consulate outside the US.
That for sure cannot be done insidne the country. I am not too sure how long before your May '08 expiry, you can apply for an extension. Someone will chime in.

H1 application is accepted 6 months prior to new H1 start date.
If you apply H1 now, your start date must be earlier than 10/25/07. The question is whether CIS accepts your petition if your new start date is much earlier than current expiration date. I don't see the point to apply extension so early.

Thanks guys for your replies. Only reason why I thot of applying for extension so early is to avoid another trip to Canada for stamping. As my visa expired now, I have to get it stamped which would be valid till my current 797 which is upto May'08 and when I get an extension after that I need to go for stamping again.
