Did anybody investigate how many "quarters" they earned to avoid filing I-864 (adv. of support) with their I-485 ? I've been working on F-1 & OPT, H-1 since 1997, so was wondering if I could request Social Security Admin. to tell me how many of these quarters I earned. Any advise?

Every year SSA mailed you a letter detailing how many work credit you have, etc. If should tell you if you earned 40 already or not. They don't tell exactly how many credit you have, just approx.

I remember those letters and I've been throwing them away. Do you know from what point do they start adding them up? From the first time you start paying taxes?

From the first time you started paying FICA (SS/Medicare). You did not do so as an F-1 student, but did so with an H-1.

However, I'd suggest that if your USC spouse cannot meet the poverty guidelines for the affidavit of support, there's a bigger issue.

No, he can. But, if we can avoid paying for extra forms, why not?

to qualify for i-864W with 40 quarters means you have to have been working legally for a minimum of 10 years

I've been working legally for 10 years, but if F-1 doesn't count, then I won't have enough credits.

If you worked off campus with authorization while you were on F1, Then those earnings may count towards the 40 quarters. Go to your local SS office and see how many credits you earned.
