I-485 pending - SSN for my 10 years old kid

Hi,

Can I apply for SSN while my kid's I-485 is pending ? (parents status also I-485 pending - AOS) Do I need to wait until my kid's age is 18 ?

With pending I485 the kid is not eligible to SS. The only way is to apply for working permit, for sure for him not to work, but to obtain SS number which will help in taxes and may be other situation.

Apply for the EAD (I-765) and use that to get the kid's SSN. If you filed the child's I-485 on or after August 2007 and paid the $1000+ fee, the EAD is free (well, not really free, the cost was included in the $1000).

EAD is needed for those who don't have other documents or status that provide SSN eligibility (e.g. green card, US citizenship, work visa, etc.).

Yes you can even to 1 day old non USC with pending I485 or other category qualify for EAD
