How to Verify a Canadian's TN Status?

I have a friend who is a Canadian and I was trying to bring him onboard as a consultant with my company. The HR Director at my company keep asking him for papers from his present employer that show his TN Status. My friend kept saying that he was never given papers like this and did not have them. So, how could my present employer verify his TN status to make sure it was okay?

It seems the HR Director thinks the TN Status can be transferred similarly to H1B status, which is not the case. Your friend would need a new TN to get the new job, so it seems irrelevant to ask for his present status.

If the employer wishes to employ a TN who is already in the U.S. then a form I-129 is filed with USCIS with all the evidence required for that filing. see www.uscis.gov A TN may work for more than one employer. They just have to investigate the procedures involved.

However, BigJoe, in order to prove that one is in legal US status, (which is required for the COS portion of I-129) pone needs to actually show status.
