Nope - when I applied the PO clerk told me expected processing time was 4 weeks - that's up tomorrow.

And from the "check status site"
The Online Passport Application Status Check is temporarily unavailable due to routine maintenance.

I tried calling them - they were too busy to be able to take my call, try back later.

I'm getting a complex here LOL - my N-400 took 17 months to complete because I applied just after the fee rise of July 2007, and they were backlogged. Seems my passport application is taking some extra time because in a few months the "canada/mexico land border" crossings will require passports, and application numbers are increasing. I am traveling late April, so, if I don't receive it soon I will make an appointment at the LA office to collect it in person.

I received an email today - 3/27, giving me a "locator number" and telling me to expect my passport on/around 4/4.
So, it seems standard applications are currently taking around 5 weeks through the LA office.

Do you need to sign N445 in front of an IO or can you sign it ahead of time?

Signing before is fine.
