How much time between interview and getting GC / work permit

Hi all,

I am trying to understand this:

how much time is there, usually, between the date of the interview and getting the actual greencard / work permit (assuming that the interview goes well)

Very broad, basic question, I know but it's pretty hard for me to understand this part of the process.

Your question should be like this, "How much time between your entry to US and Greencard/SSN?". And the time is about three weeks at maximum. And interview doesn't mean you will get the visa, or you will get the visa on the spot. Some people also are put under Admnistrative Processing, which would take months before they get the visa. Also, getting the visa doesn't mean you will leave for US immediatley. You will get the green card and SSN only when you enter US.

Best of luck!

Well, actually: I am in the USA already and have been here for a while on a H1B, so I have had a SSN and all for a few years already. But I am interested to know b/c my wife is on a H4 and should be getting a GC, SSN (and thus a work permit) right. So I like to know: how long does that process take (doing AOS) ?

Look at people's signatures on this thread:

You'll see that it takes anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks to receive GC after a successful interview.

Cheers that's a good pointer. So, I am the DV lottery winner- does this mean that my wife will also automatically get a work permit the minute our greencard arrive in the mail? Or does obtaining a work permit another step? (from what I understand, a greencard = a work permit but I am not 100% sure.)

just to clarify: I already have a work permit in the US (H1B), but my wife has not (she is on a H4). We did enter the DV2013 separately back in 2011 when we were not married yet. So now that I won the lottery (she did not), I wonder if it matters at all who exactly won the lottery, since we are a legally married couple. Will she simply get a greencard (and work permit?) once our greencard arrive?

The GC automatically entitles your wife to work. However if you simply want additional piece of mind, you may include I-765 form with the package you'll be sending down to Chicago (assuming you're not yet current and you haven't sent this already). It doesn't cost anything to file the form, provided it's filed with I-485.

The good thing with filing I-765 is that should one's AOS application get's stuck in Administrative Processing, the person can start working without the GC, once the I-765 is approved.
