Thanks for the feedback - looks like the process is pretty fast now. I might end up applying now for the EAD anyway, just for peace of mind.
I wrote the letter to "Dear Immigration Officer", and sent it to the regular TSC mail (actually, I wrote the letter, but my lawyer mailed it). I also sent a TON of documents with it, including my non-refundable flight information, non-refundable hotel reservations, and those of all the other people who were joining me (it was a big family reunion in Canada)... My lawyer had originally thought he would fax it to TSC but when he saw the package he decided to mail it instead!
And - get this - the AP documents actually came through DHL! I actually even wrote a "thank you" after that!
