I am from a middle eastern country and I did participate in some protests and arrested and beaten by police several times

I am in USA now on b1b2

however , I have no papers or evidence to prove what happened to me and my government will not let me get any papers about it

my country is stable now (no civil war) but anyone who protest or talk freely is punished or killed

my few questions regarding asylum :

1-do I qualify for asylum in USA ?

2-not having any paper evidence .. does that lower my chances of acceptance ?

3- (I entered US 2 times on b1b2 .. first time was in 2014 .. then I traveled to other countries as a visitor then I returned to US 3 months ago but never returned to my country since I left in 2014)
does this make me not eligible for asylum because I did not file asylum within 1 year from my original entry in 2014 ?
or they count the 1 yr since the last admission (which is 3 months ago) ?

4-is hiring an attorney a must ? or I can do it by myself ? do the majority of asylum seekers hire attornies or just file it alone ?

5-what is the average of attorney cost from A to Z till the end of all the process till getting a green card ?

6-can the asylum officer deny me in the first interview ? or the outcome of this first interview is either approval or referring to court ?

7- what happens to me if officer denies at first interview ? deportation immediately ? or how long does this take ?any hope after officer denial ?

sorry for very much questions

and thanks for taking the time to answer me .. I appreciate your help .

in terms of documents, even though you could not have any documents that put you at the protest incident, you could instead use news or articles from public and credible sources e.g. newspaper, as supportin documents. if the article that you found also mentioned that protesters were beaten and detained, that would add weight to your statements. however, an attorney will help guide you through the process better than do it yourself, in my opinion. i don't think anyone can guarantee the outcome, though.

there are a few non profit organizations that are helping people with certain incomes at amazingly lower fees. i am not sure where you are now, but you can google and find out whether there is one in your area.

good luck.

After interview, officer asked me for more evidence and he sent me RFE letter. My attorney wrote a letter to him and explained that is impossible to prepare more evidence for me. I'm waiting for final decision now.

i pray for u .. good luck dear

did u give them any paper evidence initially ? or that was not possible for u too ?

Thank you so much.
I had just one paper. It's final court decision against me and a few photos about my activities.
I was 53 days in house jail and tortured. I have a case in my country's courts but I never seen that and they never let me to hire an attorney. So it's impossible for not only me but also every body like me to obtain any court documents!

i am from the middle east too , let me answer your questions

- you do not need to provide any papers but having evidence would help of course , the asylum officer knows that its not realistic that the police in your country will issue you a paper saying that they tortured you . you can send documents like news articles related to your case preferably from reputed news sources . and also reports of condition in your country.

- i believe not returning to your country since 2014 would help and can prove that you have fear returning to your country .

- the 1 year deadline is for the latest entry , alo be prepared to answer why you didn't apply the first time you entered . expect any question from the asylum officer .

- you do not have to hire an attorney , but i highly suggest that if you are not knowledgeable about asylum law and procedures.

- if you are status as visitor is valid at the time of the interview and the officer did not believe your story or could not make a decision you will be denied , if you do not have a status you would be automatically referred to the immigration court . deportation in worst case scenario would take a while. be prepared from the begging and find a lawyer so you do not put yourself in that position.

and lastly , sadly the location of the asylum office matters , San Francisco and Arlington has the best approval rate and Newyork and Houston has the lowest approval rate but in the end it all depend on how strong your case is , but being in SF or Arlington for example would improve your chances
