Loosing... please add:

1. appetite for bed time game... almost at the height of the game, spouse spews question "honey, when we will get our GC?".

good one akbari bhai...

2. someone from bihar/andhra will be losing millions of rs becos rates of dowry will too less for non GC(I already heard rates for SAP programmers are much higher than Java programmers) :)

rate is directionally proportional to salary. but these days "on the verge of getting GC" carries most rate. Most people want to see paystubs before going forward with match. An MS degree would also fetch more rate (be it any MS in any univ).
The advantages of marrying someone on the verge of getting GC is a lot. No need to live in apts, can have dish network and watch gemini, live in city of choice like Atlanta, Seattle where you can find indian grocery stores and latest movies are screened, form a housewives mafia, play cards on weekends, bring parents from India easyg. get some job easily with a GC.... offocurse it fetches a lot. Thats why rate is high

And they call themselves educated :) Asking to see paychecks- wow, imagine marrying into a family who doesnt trust you enough to take your word for how much you make. My father in law didnt even ask me my salary.Whats next - see I140 approval letter or compulsary HIV test ?

Wow everything does sell ;) Pity the middle class father with 4 well educated daughters.

There was a recent telugu educational movie where the bride insists that she wants to see blood report of her fiancee. Nothing wrong in asking, it is a matter of life.
Asking paystubs and GC docs is a lot different from asking blood report.

I think...

Most of the people who come here to work have solid moral behavior. To these people, HIV infection can result only if medical treatment is faulty. Self endangerment with venterous/indiscreet lust is out of question for my polished professional countrymen. Am I wrong ?

Still, asking for blood report is not a bad thing.

Yeah, bachelor's parties and strip tease, lap bars maybe exceptions :p and cannot be included under immoral behaviour.

As a patient, you won't know if your medical/dental treatment was faulty as far as sterlization of the equipment is concerned.

Anyway, you won't get the GC if you have HIV, unless you got infected after going for your I-485 medical and the USCIS didn't find out.

The other side is always green. Facts are with thousands if H1/GC in this country in last 10 years the rates of computer programmers are getting lower. This will affect all including the ones in line for green card in years to come. I understand those waiting for green card will say they will play 'Rummy' after they have green card. But friend, this place is not a socialist country. Corporations run this country(indirectly) behind the scene and they are putsourcing jobs or bringing new people to control wages. It is not about the skills in demand being the case - it is a bigger case of making money by corporation.

So do not be surprised after green card one may find a job paying average(or below average) salary and house prices/rents sky rocket.

dc1954..........it depends on what one defines as average salary........if one says $60/hr is average..........thats more than enough to live a happy life....

currently one can easily bill $50-100 for a average 4-5 years exp programmers...

and the fact is we desi's will benefit most with outsourcing/offshoring........becos we will be the favorite for onsite liason with the offsite team..

What company bills may be same as before but what they pay now is -
50-85K per year. The days of $60/hr are there for few by fluke. Believe me, there is more competition to get even above numbers. There is a whole long list of skills needed and companies increasinnly do not trust resumes ... There isn't gurantee that having green guarantee a well paying job. There are many
native born looking for work, i do not think they are lazy or dumb.

Now these are all symptoms of over-saturation. But company's profits are up.
I am not advocating anti-immgration here all I am pointing to is failed immigration policies of this country. I am only concerend that this may lead many with eventual green cards(after paying hefty amounts to INS an lawyers) but with below average return. Any way this is an open-ended debate and has N pro/against logic.

Agree with you dc1954. But if you notice closely, a lot of people with 4 to 5 years of experience land up in IT contracting jobs at huge non IT organizations and these companies have huge budgets and can afford high billing rates.
Companies that hire the cream are definitely competitive and now the new trend is to cut costs. Over a period of time things have changed, very few companies treat "good programmers" as "valuble assets". The overall idea of the h1b process eventually leading to a green card was to get the best out of an immigrant for the economy. Such a process improves the economy and leads to growth and new jobs. But now things are not the same. America is a country of excesses and people can afford to be the way they want.
This retrogression is not only affecting IT folks, it is affecting physicians, professors, researchers etc.... Everyone who come under eb2 and eb3.
