Holding post at post office

I am in the process of selling my house and moving into a apartment to do that.
I am expecting to sell my house in 3 or 4 months and planning to hold the post at post office till I sell my house. I will change the address (AR 11 form) once I sell the house.
Please let me know if the post office is going to hold my interview letters or send them back.

If they send it before you make the address change... I guess the post office will hold it. I think you should talk with someone in the post office to be sure.

Why don't you have your mail forwarded to your rental apartment for 3-4 months? The post office won't hold mail for more than 30 days at a stretch.

Federal Mail

As per My knowledge You cant hold or forwerd federal mail. and plz check twice from the post office before making any moves cuz lots of people are the victums of the same proble.

Their website (www.usps.gov) does not seem to list any such limitation, unless I somehow missed it. Best is to speak with them personally.

I am sure that USPS will not forward INS related mail.... but not sure about holding it...

Will talk to some one at post office about holding INS related mail...

How are you sure that they won't forward USCIS mail? kcpant just posted that he received his GC forwarded to him. Also, the USPS website says no such thing. They have a description about what does and what does not get forwarded. They don't exclude government mail from being forwarded.

You might want to speak with them personally and ask specifically about USCIS mail. Show them the NA or FP envelope you received, so that they know exactly what you are referring to. Please let us know what they say, since I would think many people may be in a similar situation and would benefit.

I agree with Faith4u on this, Federal Mail has 'Return Service Requested' and is normally not forwarded and I have seen several posts here on the board with the issue. I must say that kcpant was lucky about the Green Card. Talking to someone at the Post Office is not a Gaurantee either, would you like to take that chance?

"'Return Service Requested' letters won't be forwarded" is an opinion often expressed on the forum. No one seems to know for sure, and I don't think anyone even bothers to inquire with USPS. Such is the fear of losing a USCIS letter.

'Return Service Requested' is used for a specific purpose - in case the addressee does not live at the address anymore, AND there are no forwarding instructions with the PO.

In the present case, we are dealing with a trusted agency - the USPS - which is already handling the letter from USCIS, and has also been provided a temporary address. The letter stays in USPS custody, till it gets delivered at the new address. USPS will forward the letter.

For safety, one could use the USPS Premium Forwarding (paid) service. The USPS website clearly says that "ALL" mail will get forwarded.

Of course if one does not want to try it, then it's a different matter. I'd hate for someone to follow a suggestion (based on official USPS information) and lose an important letter. But in case you do ask the PO, please let us know what they tell you.

I talked with post person since I will be moving and has put it forwarding request. I am not sure they know it for sure. the person I talk to say there is no rule that usps won't forward any mails from uscis unless it says return service requested. some of uscis mails don't have that stamps right?

So, if the USCIS mail does NOT carry this stamp, it's all the more reason for USPS to forward it to where you have requested!! (Besides, AFAIK all USCIS mail has this stamp.)

It sounds like there are not many takers for this USPS service at least in the N-400 applicant community, with everyone on tenterhooks.

I don't know if I should get premium. I am stilll applying for green card. I checked notices I got before. there are no stamp on the envolope?????

You have already instructed the PO to forward your mail. Are you having doubts now? Just curious.

AFAIK you cannot use a PO Box for your residential address with USCIS. For your mailing address, maybe you can, but I am not sure. Please read the USCIS instructions very carefully. If in doubt, check with someone knowledgeable. You might want to check with someone who is undergoing the same application process. I assume you are not using a lawyer's services?

Since you are still applying for your Green card, what other notices have you received from USCIS? H-1/OPT? I'm curious as to why they don't have a 'Return Service Requested' stamp. I have seen several of my friends' USCIS notices and they all have a 'Return Service Requested' stamp. Maybe someone else on the forum can say what's on their notice envelopes.

If you are yet to begin the GC process, why not just give USCIS your new address and avoid all this forwarding hassle? I'm not sure what to suggest. Would you rather just have them hold your mail and you go and periodically pick it up from the PO?

Like I said in an earlier post, I'm just stating what USPS says on their website. I'd hate for someone to lose their mail for any reason by following a recommendation from the forum.

believe it or not, the evolope for my temp gc does not have return service either. I just filed remove temp and my lawyer got the notice but I did not. just wonder

The USCIS ombudsman has previously suggested to USCIS that they get rid of the "return to sender requested" stamp in order to for all correspondence to be forwarded.

In the response to the Ombudsman USCIS 2006 annual report to congress, USCIS responded that they are in the process of changing the postal meter which will lead to the eventual removal of the "return to sender requested" stamp and implementation of a 2 day delivery system with better tracking with the new fee structure in 2007.However, the USCIS response seems specific to the production and shipment on GC only.

Even if there are forwarding instructions with the PO, mail stamped with Return Service Requested won't be forwarded.

Below quoted from 2005 Ombudsman recommendation to USCIS :

According to the U.S. Postal Service’s Domestic Mail Manual, section 507 Mailer Services, subsection 3.4.1(c), the following types of mail are not forwarded – “mail showing specific instructions of the sender (e.g. Return Service Requested or Change of Service Requested).”
