It's been more than two weeks. According to the US Mail, they have received my letter and it has been signed. No response back from them yet though. How long did it take for you guys to receive this letter?

Selective Service

I called them after waiting two month and they send the Status letter the next week. Call them, and if you can't get through redial till you get through and talk to someone.

Just went through this...

Well, I am 39, and even though it might not be big deal as far as being drafted, it is a BIG DEAL since you won't be able to send your I-400 application, unless you include this letter as well.

If you are 31 or older, the Selective Service question is largely irrelevant for naturalization. Being 31 puts the registration period (i.e. the time between the 18th to 26th birthdays) outside the 5-year moral character window, and the failure to register is not a permanent bar to naturalization.

Even for those for whom it is relevant, it is not necessary to send the letter with the N-400 application; the letter can be brought to the interview. And if you actually registered, the letter is not even necessary, because the IO will accept a printout from the SS web site if it showed that you registered (they are able to verify the printed information).

So it is not a big deal, you can go ahead and send in your N-400 application without worrying about this. But if you are filing an I-400, I don't know what that is.

You don't need to include a selective service letter with the N-400 application. The same goes for other evidence as well such as tax receipts, ticket payments, utility bills etc..which can all be brought to interview. In your case, they don't require evidence of selective service letter due to your age.

Wow! Thank you guys! I am going to send my N-400 application then!!! (and not I-400, sorry, my bad!)

Thanks again!

One last question: What if I go to the interview and they ask me for this letter? (not to mention I need this letter for my college to get financial aid).

If you registered, get the printout from the web site and show them that at the interview.

If you didn't register and they ask for it, remind them that you are over 31 so the failure to register is outside the statutory period and is no longer a bar to your naturalization. If you first entered the US after your 26th birthday, also mention that fact. Ask for the supervisor if they still give you a problem.

It's taking an average of 8 weeks to get the letter from Selective Services I sent my request (with all documentation etc) on Feb 21st and got my letter on Apr 23rd (after my interview!).

Wow, so you didn't even had the Selective Service letter with you then, huh!? OK, I am going to mail my N-400 form then (even though it is specifically asking for this letter to be included with the main application). Here I come...!

Believe me you won't be the first one to mail your application without that letter. If they need you to bring it to the interview, they will tell you. But as others have stated you are 39 so way past the statutory period. Again, it's not a big deal.
As for financial aid, that's another story lol..
