H4 to H1 and I-94

Hi,

I had come to US on an H4 and I applied for a H1B thru a consultant. I can now officially work from 1 OCT-06 I have got the approval now and per my consultant, I went to the SSN office to get a SS Card. However they said that my status still shows as H4.

Also one more observation was that my I-94 number on the new I-94 was the same as the I-94 on the old card [when I came into USA]. Is this Normal ?

Please advice. I am a bit tensed about this as my employer has not yet provided with my I797. He has just given me the I-94 form.

Any advice would be appreciated

(Your status will change only from 1 Oct to H1)
Also one more observation was that my I-94 number on the new I-94 was the same as the I-94 on the old card [when I came into USA]. Is this Normal ? Correct, That should be your old number means your status keep contiuing.

I also got my H1 this year with a start date of Oct 1st 2006.

Does this mean I cannot apply for SSN till 1st of Oct?
