H4 expired

We forgot to apply for the H4 extension along with the H1 extension in DEC of last year. We applied for the extension in FEB of this year and its coming close to six months by the end of MAY and we still have'nt heard anything from INS, the lawyer is advising my wife to leave the country and have the stamping done in India(before the six month term expires) He was also suggesting that we can go to canada but he was not sure, can someone please tell me if they have gone through a similar situation and please advice if you know anything about this process

------ your lawyer is correct because if H4 ext gets denied then she will be out of status from the day her I-94 expired, if rejected in Canada then she has to go directly to India from Canada
