I would like to share my experience I had for getting h4 for my wife. I went to India(to be specific ahmedabad) in the first week of december to get married. After my marraige, my wife applied for a new passport to change her last name and my name endorsed in her passport under the tatkal scheme. Though its tatakal it took about 8-9 working days to get her passport and because of that I had to travel back to usa alone. Its better to hire an agent to get this work done as you know you would get frustrated and impatient with the long queues at the passport office and lack of guidance from the clerks/officers working there (no offense plz just and exp). Out of fear, I carried the original I-797 with me when I came to usa, I thought immigration officer at POE will ask. But they just checked my stamped visa in my passport which was valid till 2004. The very next day, I had to FedEx the original I-797. But before coming to usa I took the interview date of 14th jan for my wife, since while submitting the application at tts-visa office in ahmedabad they checked your original I-797 and kepy the copy of I-797 with them. The document was delivered by FedEx within 3 days at mumbai on 9th jan as my wife was coming to mumbai for her interview I sent it to my relatives place. on 14th jan she went for her interview and was out with positive news within an hour. INS officer were very good and didn't confuse my wife by asking complicated questions. It was a general interview. Thanks to everyone for sharing there knowledge and experience on this forum. Special thanks to INS officer who made it a smooth experience. I wish everyone a best of good luck in getting there visas.
