John, First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on receiving job offers!!! I can´t tell you if H1B visa sponsorship thru employment is closed now. I advise you to contact your job offerents because perhaps they know something about this topic. Besides, you can ask any immigration authorities. I suggest you to visit Foreign Immigration www.foreignimmigration.com They especialize in immigration and I´m sure they will be able to help you.

Who told you this bullshit.
For year 2006, which start from Oct 2005, there are 65K h1b visas, so far only 27K petition were filed with INS. So you can file your h1 petition straight away, if you pay $1,000 extra it will go under premimum process, you will get the results with in 2 weeks time. However you can start work from Oct 1, 2005.

Up till today, the H1B visa number has reached under 30K. They still have plently of visa awaiting. There is no effect from the INS backlog. You may ask your prospective employer to file for the LCA certification.
