H1B to J1 visa

A friend of mine is currently in the US on H1B visa. He would like to change his status to J1 visa, so he could extend his stay for another 6 months (this 6 month funding will be provided by his home country). What does he need in order to apply the change of status in US? Proof of funding, and what else? Thanks a lot for any input!
 
he'll need a DS-2019 form, and with that he will apply for change of status. He needs to be careful - if the funding comes from his home government, he will be subject to 212(e) or home residency requirement. He needs to research that.
