H1b to Green card

We are currently in our first yeay on H1b and my wife and kids on H4, we wish to persue the green card, can we do this ourselves or does the company I work for have to do this, also does anyone have any idea how long this will take.

It is not possible to do it yourself. You can only obtain permanent residency (greencard) through an immediate US Citizen relative (parents, brother/sister, children) or through employment.
