H1B renewal -Urgent

Hello, I need some information about the extension rule for 240 days after a vailid H1B has expired. I know that I can apply 6 months ahead..But what happens if I am too close to the expiration? Do I have to submit the petition for renwal anytime b4 my H1 expires or do I have to get an acknowledgment by the date my H1 expires to continue working. Or is it something like, it has to be with BCSI for 30/60 days b4 my H1 expires so that I can remain in status.
I know that is worst case, I can go for premere porcessing but I wanted to know the exact rule so that I go for it only if I have to. Thanks in advance.

---------------- your H1 extension petition MUST reach USCIS Before your I-94 gets expired, once you file it before I-94 expiry you are ok and you will get the H1 ext filing reciept and that filing reciept is enough for you to continue working. Make sure the lawyer/employer send the h1 extension before your I-94 gets expired

Thanks ginnu.. That releaves a lot of my stress. I was worried about it having to be with the USCIS 60 days b4 H1 expiration.
