H1B, Oct 1 and Sept. 20....need information. PLS HELP!

I went to the US Consulate here for visa stamping. I had no problem with that because the consul who interviewed me is very kind. However, he emphasized that I can't leave the country until Sept. 20, 2005 since effectivity of my H1B is October 1 which I understand. My concern now is I have already a scheduled flight on the 13th and my employer is expecting me there next week not to work immediately but to secure SS number, etc. Is there a ruling about not to depart until Sept 20? If there is, can a letter from a lawyer explaining early departure be accepted by INS or whatever agency so they wont block my entry? Please guide me about this. Thank you!

You can enter the US with H1 only 10days before H1 gets valid. Since it's a solid rule, company's letter most likely does not work.
If you have other valid visa, you may be able to enter.
