H1B holder, the contract will be ended in February, but...

I'm glad to find this website and have an opportunity to discuss my issue with you all.

I have had my H1B petition from this August 2010, working at the university. My contract will be over at the end of February, so I have been looking for a new job so far. I have had several phone interviews, getting positive feedbacks. but, holiday period makes every process delayed and slow. Further recruiting process will be continued in January, but I don't exactly know when it will be.

That's why all my concerns started. now, I only have two months to maintain my H1B petition with my current employer. I was told that I have to leave if my contract is over. there is no grace period with H1B. sigh...

I wonder how long/fast the comapny takes care of H1B transfer. Am I still able to do H1B transfer if my contract is over? or how quickly do I need to file H1B transfer?
I've read that I can work for a new company as long as the company receive the receipt response from USCIS. This receipt should come before my contract is over?

I have been thinking many other options, too, including getting green card through national interest waiver. But, I'm not sure 1) this is a good idea, 2) it's possible, 3) it's going to help me to maintain my status here in US.

If anybody has similar experience and have thoughful comments or advice, please please give me better ideas/suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you all!

Thank you for your time and consideration.

---It depends on company and company lawyer. They need to get LCA for you that is filed with H1 petition.
Am I still able to do H1B transfer if my contract is over? or how quickly do I need to file H1B transfer?
---------------------- Your H1 Transfer petition MUST reach USCIS while you are on H1 status. once the company stops paying you or writes to USCIS to revoke your H1 then you will not be on H1 status.

----------------- One can join new employer once H1 transfer Petition reaches USCIS and employer gets H 1 transfer filing receipt. The risk at this time is that USCIS is sending long list of RFE for H1 transfer and if employer is unable to provide what is asked in RFE then USCIS will deny the H1 transfer and H1 holder will have no status. Best approach at this time is to file H1 transfer with premium Processing so that one gets results in 20-25 days once Petition reaches USCIS and join only AFTER H1 Transfer gets approved.

------ if you are qualified NIW why not?? go to good lawyer and find if you are eligible.
