H1B extension - how long can it be valid for?

Hello Gurus,

My friend has had his H1B for 2.5 years now and it will be expiring in October.
Can his new visa (extension) be valid for 3 years or will it be valid for less than 3 years?
Can he ask his company's attorney to make sure it will be valid for 3 years?

His adjustment of status has been pending for about a year now.

If you ask for 1 year, it comes with 1 year. If you ask for 3 years, it comes with 3 years.

So, are you saying he can ask for a 3-year visa?
Why would anyone ask for a 1-year visa if they have the option to ask for a 3-year visa?

Believe or not, H1 is technically for temporary workers. If employers want them for 1 year of service, they may ask for 1 year in petition.
