What is the difference between an H1visa and a green card? How many times can a H1 visa be renewed? Can you apply for a green card while on an H1 visa?

I am just trying to figure out what my husband should apply for. I am applying to schools in the US (we are canadian) and will have an F1 visa. He plans on apply for jobs in the same city so that we can go together. What kind of visa would he be eligible for?

Thanks,
Carla

Depends on what your husband wants to. If his profession is skilled profession like software or engineering or healthcare then he can apply for h1. Otherwise he can work on TN (not exactly sure what it is called) visa.

Thank you for your reply.
He works in IT tecnical support and has a 2 year college diploma and 5 yeras work experience. What is he eleigible for with this?

What is a TN visa nad what are the rules for this?

He is eligible for H1 visa and I think that is more appropriate visa. Not sure if he can work on a TN visa. However if he enters on a TN visa then he can come here and find a job and then his company may file H1/L1 for him. Or if he can find some company that can file H1/L1 while he is in canada then that is better option for him.
In any case, he needs to find employment first. If he is on L1 then you will get a work permit and you will be eligible to work anywhere you want to.

I do not know much about TN visa. But know that it is part of NAFTA agreement among the north american companies. Canada is part of it. YOu may fine more info on the net.

Check, 3/4 yrs university degree is required for H1

The L1 looks interesting as it allows the spouse to work anywhere in the US as well. Thanks for the info.

Yes you are right . I over looked that. I do not know exactly, but the amount of experience you need in case if you do not have a 3/4 year degree is ridiculous (Something like 10 years). Anyway, L1 would be a good option I guess.
