H1 transfer - possible dishonest employer... what to do?

Hello, I'm currently really concerned about my H1B transfer situation, and I need some advice on my situation:
Almost a year ago, at the beginning of October 2005, my new employer started transferring my H1. As soon as my employer received the receipt number, they gave it to me to assure me that everything was going well in the process. However, in April 2006, I got notified by the automatic email notification that my H1 application was missing some required information. I called my employer, which told me they would take care of the issue. As of today, when I check the status of the case, it says that they received additional evidence on May 2006 and that a written notification will be sent once a decision has been made. Now, in the last months, I have heard from a few friends that my employer ruined their H1 process, and my employer was giving them very questionable excuses about it. My employer continuosly told them (and is telling me now as well) to not worry about their H1, but they lately found out that he actually "forgot" to apply for their H1. Their situation is a bit different, as they wanted to get a brand new H1, and I'm transferring an existing one instead. I never told my employer that I know about my friends' situation, but I'm starting to believe that he is, for some reason, attempting to keep me in this 'unknown' status as long as possible. He is still telling me to not worry, but it has been almost a year since my transfer started, and I don't know what to do about it. After bugging them for weeks, they supposedly called the immigration center to see what is holding up my case, and they are now waiting for them to investigate why this is taking this long. The worse thing is that the immigration people would not give me any information as I'm not the petitioner, but the employer is, and they tell me to ask my employer about my H1.

Was anyone here in a similar situation? Is it even legal for me to work for my employer now? Any help or suggestion would be really appreciated.

Thanks

------------- where did they call? I-800? that is not immigration center or USCIS service center

H1 transfer filed October 2005
Got RFE in April 2006
employer or lawyer replied RFE
USCIS received additional evidence on May 2006
It seems H1 approval may be with the employer or he may be telling lie to you if he is not telling lie then ask his lawyer to get update from the service center.

He is supposedly now waiting for an answer from the service center. I also found out after starting the transfer that my employer does not have a lawyer, but the company is doing everything "in-house". They are not giving me any details on what number they are calling, but the number I was trying to call is 1-800-375-5283. Is there any other number I can call to get some kind of response on what is going on?
You also seem to imply that maybe my employer got the approval but he is not telling me... but if he received it, wouldn't I able to read it when I check the status online?
Thanks
