H1 renewal

Hi
My first H1B expired in May. My company filed for a renewal before the expiry. So, I understand that I have received an automatic 8 month extension and can continue working. My renewal is expected to be approved in another couple of moths. My question is can I change employers during this period? Can the new employer just transfer my H1 visa? Or do I have to wait till the renewal comes through?

I should have been more specific. I may not have much choice here. My company has announced layoffs. So, my question is more about whether legally it is possible to transfer H1 visas during this period.
