I had h1b before , my current status is L1b.
A prospective employer is ready to file for petition (L1b to H1b)
Can I start working for new employer as soon as the petition is filed with the service center , or do I have to wait till the approval ( H1b plus new I-94). ?

Since L1 is for intra company transfer employees, you do not have previlage like H1 to H1 transfer, where you can work once you get your H1 receipt notice.
You should get your status changed also you come under quota, in this case your start date may be Oct 1, 2005.

Is this true even though I was on H1b before.
I came to US on H1 for 3 months went back for 2 weeks and came on L1b and that is my current status.
Is it possible that I could switch back to my previous H1b ??
 
Thanks for the link.That explains it. It does appear that the person need not be currently on H1b , if he had H1b earlier and his current status is legal . he can join the new employer on filing of the new h1b petition.

Only risks is , since if person is on L1 and if he joins the new employer on the date the petition is filed and for some reason the petition is denied.. he would lose his previous job as well....huh..

in these case , I would rather wait till the approval date
