H1 out of status?

I have H1 for 3.5 years, never applied green card, and am planning to quit job and go to graduate school in the Fall. How long can I stay in US after quitting without the risk of being denied of F1 in my home country's embassy?

Before quitting the job get an I 20 from a school and apply COS from h1 to F1.
