H1 extension and I-94 expiry

Hi,
My H1B extension was filed in Feb \'02 and my I-94 expired on May 1st. I believe, it may take another one month before my H1B extension gets approved. I need to go to my country very urgently (next week).
As my present I-94 shows 1st May as expiry, will there be a problem with re-entry or issuance of visas later in my life. Is there a way I can avoid it?
  Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Debu

Are you going to wait for new H1

before coming back to US? If so, it will be a better Idea to have consular notification of H1 approval so that your H1 is not considered abandoned.
You can enter US with an old stamp, new 797 and a letter from employer stating that you are still employed (or recent pay stubs)
