H1-B first time extension

Hello All,
My H1 visa expires in september of 2004. This is my first H1. Can anyone tell me how early can I apply for the extension. I read somewhere you can't apply for extension before six months from the date of expiry.

Your employer/lawyer can file H1 extension 6 months advance of H1 expiry date or I-94 expiry date
