H-1B - status question -URGENT

I am no longer with the company who sponsored my H-1B visa. My H-1B visa currently is set to expire in 2009.
Parallely, I have applied for permanent residency via my spouse who is a US citizen. I-130/I-1485 have been filed, but I havent yet recieved my temporary EAD.
Do I need to get my H-1B transferred to another company asap? Is there any set limit to do the same? Also, what would be my status in the time being.
I would really appreciate any advice in this regard.

If you want to do everything legally, you need to transfer your H1 unless you have EAD. Your status remains H1 as long as you are working til you use EAD for work.
