H-1 expires need extansion for medical reason

Hi, I am in very awkward situation. My H-1 expires by the end of December and I was planning to leave the country. However, my wife broke her ankle and she is not supposed to travel for 2 months. I have a report from Doctor. Can I get a tourist visa while in the States, or can I ask for any type of extension so taht i do not go out of status? ...really appreciate your comments...visashy

you did not post your full situation.
do you have any LC filed for you that is pending more than 365 days. if answer is "yes" then you can file H1 extension
did you spent some days out of US while on H1? you can also recapture those days and can file extension(submit the passport pages with all US entry date stapms)
or file for tourist visa and file before your I-94 expires and file for your wife also. Talk to your lawyer
