Guestions regarding H visa

I was holding an unrestricted J-1 visa (visting scholar) to work at a university. The DS-2019 says that I can work at that university until October 2004. Now, a new employer (university position) filled for H-1B premium processing. We also filled for changing my wife from J-2 to H-4.
We got a notice that the INS received further evedince on januaray 22 nd. Now the case is pending because of a background check.
My questions are:

1) How long shall I wait until I get an approval?
2) Can my wife work with J-2 visa although she got a receipt number that the INS received her application for H4?
3) Can i still work with the J-1 (DS-2019)?

2&3 . Yes Until H4/H1 approval date
