Green Card Sponsor Responsibility

My father sponsored for my mom's green card. They are now divorced since 2005.

My understanding is that the sponsor person is financially responsible for the person they sponsor. My mother has been in difficulty and I'm afraid that she is putting herself in a bad and expensive situation purposely.

Is my father really responsible? He hasn't been in her life for a couple years now. How will this affect him? Is there anything he can do to protect himself?

Thanks

He is financially responsible for her for 10 years from the date the form was signed and there is no way to get out of it.

However, it's important to note that said financial responsibility extends only to government benefits. If she racks up private debts on her own, that's not his problem.

Thank you for your answers.

I'll make sure she doesn't apply for social benefits. She can apply for citizenship at end of 2009.

I really enjoy this forum. It helps to talk with people that understand our situations :)
