My friend wants to ask a question:

I got my green card thru my mother who married U.S. citizen. I have been living in the United States for over 7 years. Then, my mother and stepfather relocated to other country for work, so I move with them. Then, I move to other country to live with my now husband(U.S. citizen). My husband worked outside of the United States. It has been outside of the U.S. over 6 months. I will going back to the U.S. soon. I just wondering if we move back to the United States when am I going to be eligible to apply citizen?

Thank you.

How long have you been outside the US now?

And how much longer will the husband be working outside the US, and is his work for a US employer or international organization like the UN, IMF, or NATO?

How many of those 7 years were after green card approval? Did your mother become a US citizen before you turned 18? Did your stepfather legally adopt you, and at what age was the adoption finalized?

My husband is in the army(U.S.) located outside of the U.S. (I married in December) I don't think he will be station in the U.S. anytime soon.

I got my green card back in 2005. I believe from my stepfather because my mother still holding her green card. I think everything finalize on my 16 birthday. My mom did all the paperwork since I was still in my country(teenager). I will call her to make sure everything tomorrow.

Thank you for all the answer.

He's overseas in the US military, so you might be able to qualify for expedited citizenship based on Section 319(b) if he's going to be overseas for at least a year and you're accompanying him. See http://www.ilw.com/articles/2006,0525-mehta.shtm

If your stepfather legally adopted you, you might already be a US citizen and don't know it. Note that adoption is not necessary for a stepparent to sponsor a stepchild to immigrate to the US. If he only sponsored your green card process but didn't adopt you, you wouldn't derive citizenship through him.
