Green card extension

I want to get my green card extended because it is due to expire. What is the procedure for that. Are there any possible downsides to that as opposed to applying for us citizenship. Thanks.

Apply for a new card via I-90 form.

The only "downside" is that you have to retain US residency ties by living in US, whereas as a US citizen you can live outside the US.

That's one way to understate it!

Ultimately, the downside is that you don't get the numerous rights of being a citizen. If those rights aren't particularly important to you, you can simply renew the green card and continue living your life the same as before.

Note that even if you apply for citizenship, you still need to renew your green card unless it has more than 6 months left before expiration at the time you apply for citizenship.

FYI, if you need to travel after your greencard expires but before you get your new one (or if the greencard will expire while you're in the middle of a trip), get your passport stamped before you leave. I believe you can get this done at an Infopass interview. The receipt letter you review after submitting the I-90 isn't enough to get back into the US (i.e., you will probably be let in, but only after you go through secondary review at the border, get hassled by some incredibly rude civil servant and miss any connecting flights).
