Hello, I'm trying to visit Italy this summer to see my family. (Italy is not my home country)
I already have my green card but I do not have a travel document.
To enter Italy I need to apply for a visa and use my national passport.
Is there any risk involved in using my national passport to get a visa for travel ?
I heard that it's better to apply for a RTD then using your national passport but I never seen this requirement on any USCIS documentation.

Thank you

Last year I went to the Bahamas, Norway, Italy, Germany, Greece using my RTD. I used it because back then I didn't have my GC. Flying back, at the immigration in DC, I was sent through secondary inspection to get a new "i94" and I asked the IO If there was any problem using GC+NP, and he told me "Nope! Not at all!"

A month ago I went to Italy,Germany,Greece and Turkey using my GC+NP and flying back I went through immigration at LAX and ,again, I asked the IO the same question, and he told me "No problem! It's up to you".

So he swiped my GC and said "Welcome home"!

Cis and cbp are unclear about using ones passport and rtd. If you do not fear using your passport and you can explain this IF YOU ARE QUESTIONED ABOUT IT during your citizenship interview, you can use it if its still valid. Renewing it is a little iffy. When you enter the us with it it is highly unlikely you'll be questioned about using your passport. If you use your rtd, they'd even probably tell you to use your passport as you're a permanent resident.
