German wants DV2010 info :)

Hi guys,

my girlfriend is German, and I suggested that she join the 2010 DV lottery. She's a 24 year old bachelor's student. She has a technical degree already, though. Given all those, she's pretty much eligible, right?

I just have a question. If she is selected, she'll be eligible to go from October 2009 to September 2010, right? Or, is that when she can apply for the visa? If she wanted to go for a visit before then, and after she is selected, will she be allowed in on the VWP, or even with a non-immigrant visa, even though she has the intent to immigrate?

After she submits DS-230, she will most likely not be able to get a nonimmigrant visa, but most likely will be able to get an entry on VWP
 
Cool, thanks raevsky. It seems like a real chance, but she's nervous anyway. Are there any drawbacks she should know about to applying for this and winning? I mean, she graduates next summer, and wants to get an internship and then go to graduate school in the US. Are these possibilities, and not grounds for denial at the interview because she doesn't have a job lined up and doesn't intend to work immediately? She has some savings, and her parents can back her up if necessary.
 
If she has a source of funding for her studies and housing, that should be OK provided she gets a profession that allows her to live on her own after the graduates.
