GC status - employed outside us

Hi,

I am a Greencard Holder, residing permanently in the US for about 3 years now (after acquiring GC).

I am employed with an IT firm in US. Now if I am working for them, outside the country for a long period of time (say 5-8 years), will I lose my GC?

Thanks.

You can get a reentry permit that will allow you to stay outside the US for 2 years, and then return to the US to renew it once for another 2 years. Stay beyond that, and you'll very likely lose your GC.

Also, if you intend to become a US citizen, make sure you get an approved N470 to preserve your residency for citizenship eligibility. I am in the same boat. I work for a US employer in Australia. I am here for a couple of years. I have obtained a re-entry permit valid for two years and a N470 approval letter. On top of that, I make at least 3 trips to the US every year to avoid any problems later on when applying for naturalization.

Hello blkhawk,

I am just curious. Since you are working in Australia, I am guessing on an assignment from your US employer, do you still pay taxes in the US?

Thanks,

If he wants to keep his Green card, he MUST report income to IRS, regardless of who employs him.

Whether he pays taxes or not depends on (a) if he excludes the income using form 2555 or (b) ifthe credit he receives for OZ tax cancels his US liability.

But he need to report all world income to IRS.

yes I do. this is very important. even if you work overseas, you still have to file your US tax return. you might end up owing nothing after deductions/exclusions, but still you must file your taxes with the IRS.

my company takes care of filing my taxes in Australia and US thru a major tax company. It's a little complicated so let the specialists do it.
