Let me frst say this is the best site on immigration...had used 8yrs back and it is still great!!!

Am US citizen. Have my parents ready to apply GC. Couple of questions we are trying to figure out:

- How much time does it take from I-130 to end thru Consular processing (assuming it is faster) for
Indian Nationals.

- Does Medicare / Medicaid kick-in when they have a GC or they become citizen (which is another 5yrs
after GC).

- Finally, any experience in doing all GC paperwork yourself vs hiring an attorney.

Any info or experience will be helpful. Thanks

They will not be eligible to buy into Medicare for 5 years, since they didn't contribute to FICA for 40 quarters. I don't believe they will be eligible for Medicaid, either.

They can buy into Medicare (at a cost greater than that paid by person who has earned SS by working) after 5 years as LPR AND over age 65. In first 5 years - emergency Medicaid only in most states. (Hint cancer treatment, heart surgery, etc is NOT emergency coverage.)

Expect to buy medical insurance in state high risk pool if unavailable on open market. Of course, if they are less than age 67, they could go to work for company providing health insurance. Many posters are bringing parents in late 50s and early 60s. USCs and LPRs are still working as normal retirement ages is now at least 66. If they are in that age bracket, they should both expect to get jobs; after all, they are in the USA and need to abide by US norms and early retirement is not an option for most US workers anymore.
