Full page ad in NY times today

GCBY:

I didnt know they were this expensive.

But the amt of money we can raise would be proportional to our frsustration, the return on investment, and the support. We are frustrated, getting retrogression addressed for $100-$200 range is good ROI, and if we add up members in this forum, on competeamerica and our friends we can drag into this, we can collect a lot of money.

We should put an ad in a publication that not only goes tot eh powerful and elite but also to the ones who have a social and political conscience. Also something that is read by the political nerve center (Washington DC). Also, the readership shoudl be able to relate to the cause n a daily basis.

The NY times readership would fit a demographic profile of liberal, pro-legal immigration, well-read, socially and potitically conscious, like to participate in rallys :)-)), democrats :)-)), having personal friends caught up in immigration tangle and fed with illegal immigration. Washington DC would have readership representative with a profile of potical and social awareness and more importantly the ones who weiled political clout.

So to begin wit I vote for NYTime and Washinton Post. Lets find out what they cost. My feeling is they would be much cheaper. And if full age is expensive, we cn go for half page. And maybe they have special rates for ads for social justice causes (I guess I am being too optimistic here).

GREAT WRITEUP SANTOSH -- Count me in for at least $100

$100 at the first go, & depending on how the collection goes, I am sure we all can chip in a bit more....

This has been done in the past (Project Kashmir; think they used paypal), Can anyone rope in Attorney Khanna. It would be of immense help to get his views in getting this rolling...

In addition as Santosh suggested we would need assistance of International folks in the media/PR/advertising industry to put together a VERY impactful ad. Perhaps folks in the NY/NJ/CT area mat know of someone

what do you think folks?

what is the best way to get Mr. Khanna involved ASAP?

I am glad to see (material) support. People are already making pledges. This is good. I dont know who knows M. Khanna well. Any volunteers?

And who would be the best liason for Competeamerica? I did crude google search for rates in NYT. I think it may cost under $100000. But this is very preliminary.

And who wants to put a "sticky" thread for poll to enlist support and money pledges.

Santosh

I called NYT. They said rates range form 45000 to 280000 for full-page ad, deending on the secton of the newspaper and the day of the week.

They gave me their number to call 212-556-7777 for more info. The reps dont work on weekends.

I did the same, same response.... It might make sense to go at least 2 half-page ads in 2 publications, Perhasps NYT & Washington POst

Here is one cheap media $1K, we should focus in DC ads

just a thought to begin with, this is a free distribution in the DC area, but reaches the masses. again the washington post is one newspaper. there is a lot of networking amongst people in DC and thus spread the word around, it is also always a job growth area and very cosmopolitan so people don't worry on foriegners taking the jobs

Sounds great !`

I can also contribute 100 bucks. My lawyer said the same thing too - that if I had been here illegally GC would have been faster !

OK...this is good....how does one make a new "sticky" thread? I dont know how to do it? Need to make a poll where people can enlist and then make a monetary pledge....I guess it would be OK to start with a first step with the DC newspaper nato is talking about.....We will start with the pledges.....and collecting the money and then soon decide the newspapers to send the ads to....

We can take "paypal" payments....and other forms too..I dont know how it works.....we need to get Mr. Khanna in this effort....if he participates...people will see some validation to our efforts.....and I guess he needs to participate if we need to send a fund to some account....and someone official" to manage the money...we are talking about a lot of money here.....people need to feel comfortable that it will be used properly...and for that we need some official backing here....

Was thinking the same thing Mr. Khanna can be central point here

I can't figure out how to post a Sticky thread either

We certainly need to get Mr. Khanna involved. It would also be prudent to have someone from his staff be the owner of the thread as well as the fund.
but we need to start this soon.

AGAIN ANY FORUM MEMBERS ABLE TO GET Mr. KHANNA INVOLVED.

I am sure he has experience. In addition any project Kashmir veterans on the forums still?

let me confirm with WSJ about the cost. The reason I am slightly inclined towards WSJ is that it is read by everyone across the political spectrum unlike NY times. Also all the business leaders are likely read WSJ more than NYT. SOme of the anti-immigrant sentiment comes from the so called red states where NY times is not read. And they are exactly the people we want to win over.
But then, if WSJ is too expensive then any newspaper would do. More the better.

Anyone has any chinese or Philipino friends? We desperately need their support too. Meanwhile we should get in touch with members of India caucus.

Red vs. Blue - Attitudes

wanted to relate my experience & sense check what others have experienced....

In my conversations/correspondence/interactions with representatives as well as the poulace, from the 2 major political parties, It has been my experience that the Replublicans have been MORE in favor/been sympathetic of "legal immigrants" than the Democrats... Of course they have been very strongly against out-sourcing, but once in the country they would not mind legal immigration with the right checks & Balances

The Democrats have been either attemting to lump our situation along with the illegal immigrants or are "MORE" inclined towards the illegal immigrants & trying to get them into the mainstream....

What have you folks seen/heard?

One of the articles in NY times today was titled "Erasing the Image of the Ugly American" - William J. Holstein (editor in chief of Chief Executive magazine) interviewed Keith Reinhard (president of Business for Diplomatic Action and chairman of the advertising agency DDB Worldwide) about what can a CEO do improve the image of US. This was Mr Reinhard's answer amongst other solutions:

"A second behavioral change is our visa policy, which is seen around the world as unfriendly, unwelcoming and downright arrogant. Business leaders can say to the government, "This is really hurting us and we need to have a friendlier, more welcoming visa policy." We should encourage people to come. For example, we're working with a group called Young Arab Leaders that has identified 500 Arab and Muslim youth who we think should be brought into the United States and into U.S. companies. Think of it as the Fulbright for the private sector. Let's out-recruit Osama bin Laden."

It goes on to show that powerful business leaders are already on our side. We just need to make our case more clear and stonger. A sustained multi pronged campaign will do the trick.

WSJ; NYT & Washington Post

Why don't we shoot for a half-pager in all 3. Lets say that would be approx 30-50K each... If 1000 of us pitch in it will be $150 each on average...
Come on folks this would be what we spend in a month or so on nights out, not that big of an investment... Immense ROI my friends...

Lets hear from y'all

I'm IN

AD is fabulous Idea!
But, to get 1000 head involved to the case as volunter and pledge is not as easy as on the paper.

Here is what I suggest:

1.Choose a leader/organizator and 2 assistants or a comittee as soon as possible.
2.Draw a time line and action plan.
3.Get at least one legal advisor.
3.Try to reach everybody who effected in this situation and make a list of all potantial contributers.
4. Prapare a proposal and declare here, update it,vote it. Never mention country quota which could cause spliting many OTHERs up and might be unfair though.
5.Act!. Start with inexpensive acts, such as web page ad, even weekly magazines. (Times, Economist e.t.c) and sure WSJ and NYT.
We also need to know the most effective publication before wasting money and time.

Surely, continue to pray, even though you don't believe.
Good Luck!

what is the target audience here

lets first lay down clearly, who reads what newspaper, making a list of readers segement will help us maximize the impact and optimize. i may be mistaken but if businesses is the goal than copmete america should be one of the targets that the SJC AC21 family numbers taken out should be retro from AC21 time this gives at least 300K more EB visa, or if the people in the senate, congress etc. then I doubt how many read NY times as they mostly are in Washington DC and read the local newspaper first

I agree...we should not only target the buinessmen who read wall street journal but we also need to educate the elite and ones with a social and political conscience...businessmen are businessmen...the economy is not doing great and they dont see a big incentive...if anything they are the ones who are enjoying "legalized" indentured labor....

However.....as someone had pointed out when Americans hear about how we (legal immigrants) are suffering and waiting and are separated from immediate families, they feel enraged.....now let us tell the truth to the whole country....how not only illegal immigrants are going to get an amnesty of sorts...but not much is happening for legal immigrants.....

And we should start with baby steps......how about web ads.....ads in small newspapers in cities that have lot of immigrants......they can be half or quarter page ads...but they may be affordable......we cant put all the eggs in one basket so that all the funds are exhausted in one single day in ads in a newspaper or two...sure it will reach a mass and target audience....but there wont be periodic exposure that one can achieve through persisent but small efforts.....

Apart from putting an ad, there will be expenses to draft an ad...how the ad is designed is the key.....who did the work for the Kashmir project that someone had mentoned? maybe they could provide leads......also we shoudl proofread everything that goes in the ad so that it does not have errors and is politically correct....and we do not want to enrage any bureaucrats...the tone should be more of sharing our plight....highlighting the root causes....and suggesting practical.....and sensible solutions....as against finger-pointing.....

Does anyone here know Mr. Khanna? And how about that sticky note? Come on....someone should know about this...

By the way....how about blogs? who is good at blogging? That is the trend of the moment...a site that has a few blogs that outline someof the arguments would be great....and we can provide a link to the blog in the ad....so those interested in finding more can go to the blog and educate themselves.....
