First name spelt wrong in I-797

Hi Gurus,
I have got my H1B extension approved and got my new I-797.In the new I-797 my first name is spelt wrong.So i wanted to ask u people whether it will create any problem applying for my passport stamping in St.Louis. Also i'm afarid that it will create problem in immigartion check while ccoming back to USA after visiting india if i get stamped with this wrong name. Can u gurus advise me on this situation.
If possible you gurus let me know what is the procedure to correct my firstname on the I-797.

who made the mistake

check the i129. If it was made by employer/lawyer, you have file a h1 amendment.
If not, you can show the I129 copy and get a stamp or can enter US.
U can also request INS to get a corrected I797 . consult your lawyer.

How can i request INS to get revalidated i-797

I had a similar problem (misspelt last name) in 99. I called the INS service center and spoke with whoever answered the phone and told them about the problem. The lady asked me the correct spelling and sent the new I797 - corrected within 2 weeks to my company lawyers office. Did'nt fill out any forms etc. Not sure if things have changed post-9/11.

Which is the request for duplicate for a INS letter. As ercot points out you have to find who made the mistake and call INS before sending the form.
