Filling I-485. Have some questions.

I have a couple of questions? My wife is US citizen, and I am applying for green card based on that. I entered legally and have never been out of status.

1) I am not using an attorney presently. Is that foolish? I have all the supporting documents, and forms. Most of the forms seem relatively easy to fill out. But is having an attorney for a process like this the norm.

2) On I-485 (part 2) it is asking for A#. What is that? Is that an alien number? I am on H1B and prior to that I was on F1. Between F1 and H1B I had an EAD for practical training. That had an alien number on it. Am I supposed to use that alien number? Or do I just leave this blank?

3) On I-485 (part 3), it asks for my Nonimmigrant Visa Number. What is this number? On the H1B stamped on my passport there are a bunch of numbers. One is the control number. Another is a red number at the bottom right. But there is no mention on the visa of a Nonimmigrant Visa Number.

Thanks for the help.

1) For family based 485 it is not a serious issue. You can always hire a lawyer (and file g28) whenever it is required.

2) A# can be left blank (or find it in your I130 approval). No you cannot use the old EAD. your 485 receipt will have a A#
3) The control number is the NIV number.

eddyja and jaxen, thanks for your response. You answers on what is the NIV number are contradictory. So I don\'t know what to do? Is it different for different visas. I heard that on the K visas it is the red number but for the others it is the control number. Could that be reason for the discrepancy between your answers?

What will happen if the A# of the old EAD is used?

Hi, jaxen,
I found my wife\'s A# in her old EAD cards, also found the A#s are same in two old EAD cards. So I used it for filing the I-485. However, I mailed the package out this morning. What will happen if the old A# is used? Thanks.
