F2 to J1

Hi, right now I'm on F2 visa in the US, since my husband is still doing his doctoral study. I'm never out of status, my I-20 is still valid, but the F2 visa is already expired in mid 2005. Now, I'm planning to do residency after getting ECFMG certified. If I got accepted to a residency program, I'll start it in July 2007. In that case, I need to change my visa from F2 to J1. My question is:
1. should I go back to my home country to change my visa? or can I do it here in the US?
2. If I can do it in the US, whom or which US agency should I contact to proceed with this process?
3. What will be the amount of time needed for this process?

Any information will be appreciated. :) Thanks.

you can change your status in the US without leaving

2. If I can do it in the US, whom or which US agency should I contact to proceed with this process?

you will need to download and fill out form I-539 from www.uscis.gov website, and enclose all supporting documents requested with it. Do read the instructions. It will have the address to mail it to.

3. What will be the amount of time needed for this process?

You will need to apply at least 3-4 months in advance.
