I am a Ph.d student on a F-1 visa since August 2005. I have been staying at my friends house since August 2006 and moved to a new place this month. During this period I didn't report a change of address. Does this mean I am out of status? How can I check if I am out of status? Can verify online through SEVIS website? please respond quickly. Thank you

You should be able to stop by the International Center of your school and have them verify this information.

Unless u change university, there is no need to inform anyone when u changes houses or adresses.

-- You are not out of status, just because you ddid not report the change of address. You should do it soon though...

bigboy is right. You are not out of status, if you continue your enrollment and otherwise maintain your status. However, you need to submut a form AR-11 every time you move.

My school is now saying that there is no need to file AR-11. All students are required to verify their address every semester by logging into a school website and they say that the information there is updated to the SEVIS system.

Maybe there is also such a system in your school. Anyway you are definitely not out of status as long as your I-20 has not expired. Filing an AR-11 (Change of Address) will not hurt.

Soutpaw...

When do you finish your PhD program? For example, if you complete your PhD in 2009, and your visa expired last year, then you need to go to International Student Center of your school, ask for a new I-20 or something to that effect, get a Canadian visa and go up there, renew your visa till 2009.

In most cases, US consulates in Canada will accomodate and renew your visa because you are still enrolled in your PhD program... :p

Al, an F-1 student does not need to get a new visa as long as he/she has an unexpired I-20 and maintains his/her status. In many countries you don't even get a multi-year visa, just a three month one for entry. And, no, the US embassies in Canada are not all that accomodating, and we do hear about students having to travel back to their own countries for a visa after they visit Canada. Well, it doesn't matter, since it does not have anything to do with the original question about filing AR-11.

Yes, it's good to make sure that your school has your new address and that it updates in in SEVIS, but you still need to file AR-11.
