if a person has a ten year multiple entry visit visa, can his/her stay be extended beyond 6 months after his arrival in US? Since the visa is a ten year multiple entry, is there possibility of getting a work permit to in us?

Yes you can request extension. Non-Immigrant are not allowed to work in the US, hence work-pemit can't be issued to B Visa holders while in the US.

B visa extention is based on your real requirements and sole descretion of the USCIS. If your reason for visa extn is not satisfying the USCIS, your extn will be denied.
