Extending TN status at the border with the same employer

I am currently working as an engineer on TN. My TN expires end of the year. How long before the expiry, is it reasonable to apply for another 3 year TN with the same employer. I know there is an option of I129 processing with USCIS which can be filled 6 months before the expiry of I94, but I don't want to take the route.

Is it mandatory to obtain renewal at the Airport/Pre clearance in Canada (what I did the first time on TN), or I can drive to any major CBP border post with Mexico? Any help will be appreciated.

I normally renew my TN visa by mailing to USCIS three months in advance.

either way works as long as you physically depart the US and then seek re entry on TN
