Expiring Green-Card days before the oath!

Hello once more,

My green card is expiring within days, just eight days earlier before the oath ceremony (It's just my luck) and when I had my citizenship interview, I've mentioned the issue to the IO, and she replied, don't worry about this, just focus on your citizenship procedure. At the end of the interview she handed me form N-14 to supply her with some old 12 years documents and she gave me a month to do it... Luckily I was able to, and I waited about a month after that for the finial decision... And about 10 days ago from today, I got my oath ceremony letter form N-445, and it was dated eight days after my Green Card expiring!!!
So, I called the USCIS to see if I need to renew the GC before the oath, but he mentioned that the process will even take weeks to get it started, which makes it kind of useless, and the guy who answered me didn't know exactly what to do other than advising me to apply for an info pass to investigate the issue.

So, should I be worried about the expiring GC, or should I just go to the oath without much thought.

Regards

Go to the oath with your expired green card, surrender it, get sworn in, get your naturalization certificate and apply for a US passport. End of the story.

AT-AT, No need to renew your GC. Be doubly careful for next few days till your Oath Ceremony with Law. If after July, do not visit Arizona State with expired GC. All the best for your naturalization.

agreed, no need to apply for a new GC card. As a reminder, an expired GC card does not have an effect on the LPR status itself, it only limits its usage as e.g. travel document for border crossings. This this is much akin to e.g. an expired passport does not expire a citizenship per se.
And you could even travel to AZ with it as you can still prove your legal status with an expired card.
congrats to your upcoming oath!

Thank you much friends. I just came back from my info pass appointment, and the info officer said: "Technically, you have to have a valid card, but an expired card does not change your status of your residency, renewing your card is up to you, but at this time, it seems pointless, just go to your oath ceremony and hand in your card. Congratulation once more"... More or less, that's what he said with a smile.

FYI, my card won't expire until May 18th, and my Oath Ceremony is on May 26th... And I won't be going to Arizona any time soon, if ever, even though I'm Caucasian! :p

Arizona is definitely one of the most (if not the most) beautiful state in the country. Don't be scared to go there. People are also really nice.

Expired Green Card and travel abroad

I have a similar issue but i have to travel abroad. I'm passed the interview, before oath and my green card is expired. how can i travel abroad???

Thanks

Pat

You can try to go to an infopass appointment and ask for a stamp in your passport (I551 stamp) to use to re-enter the country. Take your expired GC, proof of having passed your interview, and if you have it, your oath letter, so they don't make you apply for a new card. Tell them they told you to do this when you called the number.

It really depend on how you got the GC, if you have conditional GC (like the one someone gets when they get it through spouse or marriage) then your status expire with your GC, if its not conditional GC then your status will not expire along with GC and you don't need to renew if you are not travelling.

Hope that Helps.

There's really very little chance someone has applied for naturalisation on a conditional GC.

Try the Infopass. If that doesn't work, you'll just have to wait for your oath ceremony and passport.
