Expired Passport

I currently have asylum status and want to apply to be a permanent resident ASAP. I just noticed my passport expired in August 2008. These are my questions:

  • What are the consecuences?
  • what should I do?
  • Can I still file the I-485 form while waiting for a new passport or should I wait?

Thanks a lot in advanced!

[*]What are the consecuences? Nothing

[*]what should I do? Nothing

[*]Can I still file the I-485 form while waiting for a new passport or should I wait? Don't wait, file the application

You think you'll need a passport? No, just apply for RTD: Refugee Travel Document if you need to travel

Applying for a refugee travel document and employment authorisation when you apply for your permanent residence is free, so apply for them all.

Are you sure? :S

My father was telling me that applying for RTD when he filed for GC was free but someone in here told me he's gotta pay for RTD which is why he didn't file for one. His application has been pending for over a year now. Is it too late to apply for one, for free?

it should be for free, this is written in the I-131 instructions

you have nothing to lose, worst case senario: RTD applicaion refused !

oh.. attach a copy if the GC application biometric letter with your I-131 application as a proof of paying the GC fees

If your dad application is still pending you can still apply for RTD without paying for it. I filed my I-485 in march , 08. Filed for my RTD in Jan, 09 based on my I-485, I attached the copy of my I-485 application and bingo I got it in the mail within a month. Dont hestitate and just apply.Best of luck !!
